Evaluation - Technologies of Contents Page.

CONTENTS PAGE;

I used iPage on a Macbook Pro to create my contents page. I used serveral shapes to create the page and also used block colours to create the look. I researched into contents pages on the internet and noticed that they all normally have a collum written by the editor. I used an image of myself to show who wrote it. For the masthead i used a font from  http://www.dafont.com/ . I then used different fonts already installed into iPages, this gives variety so your not looking at the same font all the time. This also makes it interesting.
I included the full name of my magazine in the contents page as it was abreviated on the front cover, i also used a small image of the statue of liberty to link in with title. I got this picture from 'Google Images'.
I then began on writing my headings for the different sections of my magazine,  I wrote these in Bold red and then underneath a brief description of what this involves. I used shaping to create the rough lines between the texts this separates the different headings and stories of my magazine. I added titles for the different sections of my magazine so that its orderly and neat. This then also makes it easier to access the different pages.

Evaluation - Technologies of Front Page.

In my production of my magazine, the main technology i used was camerawork. I have a lot of images throughout my magazine. I used a camera to take the pictures on my front cover and double page spread. I used a mid shot so that you can clearly see what he is wearing but the main focus is his face, which was aimed for. This shot makes the route of the eye go from the masthead to the face of my model.

Taking the photo on a canon, made the picture crisp and clear and easy to edit. I edited the light and contast to give the photo more depth. I aslo de-noised the photo to make it look more professional and magazine like. I looked at alot of magazines in my researched and almost all of the pictures used are photo shopped.
I also altered the sharpness and changed it too black and white. I used this technique for two of my images (front and double page) whereas I just changed the contrast, brightness, sharpness and de-noise. I wanted to keep these images in their previous colour as not all images are in black and white and it also gives variety.
To do these altreations and editing I used iPhoto on an Apple Macbook Pro.

Evaluation - Institutions.

The main magazine that based my magazine on was NME this was the main genre of my magazine. My magazine is mainly and Indie type genre and for NME it is the same. Looking into NME I found that NME is owned by IPC media which is then owned by Time Warner. To find out about NME and IPC media searched it on google and it came up wiht numerous links to different pages each telling me about these institutions. I also had previsouly researched IPC media and Time Warner to help me get an insight on the production of magazines and to help me create my premlinary task magazine.

Looking on google I found the official IPC media website. I have copied and pasted some information from it to show what I researched.

'' IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK adults – while our websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month.
IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket women.''

     - These are some examples of IPC magazines that they produce now-

(previous research found)

My Simularities between NME and my Music Magazine 'New Rock Times' :
  • Dark colours
  • Coverlines
  • One main image
  • Bold masthead (Both titles abreviated)
  • Both focus on certain genres of music
  • Illustrated coverlines

Evalution - Progression from Preliminary Task.

My first creation was my school magazine. I used basic techniques to put it together, such as a plain masthead from word art on an apple mac. Then I used one main image with  coverlines surrounding it. This creates an easy route for the eye. You immediately look at the masthead then follow through to the image. The image has a white background so it makes it bold and eye-catching. I added alot of icons at the bottom for sterotypical advertising which follows the main look of a magazine. I use coverlines that would appeal to a school for example activities happening throughout and an interesting story on a student who attends there. To give this look to my school magazine i downloaded adobe photoshop to create the look of the image.

Moving on from my preliminary task I used a few of the same techniques to create my music magazine. Whereas i changed a few as I felt it could be more imaginative and to show that i had made a better understanding of what conventions needed to be used. Looking at other magazines relating to the chosen genre made by my target audience I bettered my research skills and could relate my magzine to them.
I used my premliminary task to overall improve skills so I can add these into my music magazine and prgress further and show a contrast between both magazines. I also feel that doing my preliminary task I got a basic feel of what needed to be included in a magazine and what areas need to be stressed throughout these different genres.

Evaluation - Target audience.

My target auidence are teenagers to young-adults (13-18) and aimed towards females, although men can read it also. It attracts both sexes as the colour scheme isn't stereotypicallly aimed towards males or females.
I collected all this information by doing a questionaire to make sure my magazine if it were on the market as popular as possible and also giving what my selected target audience want.

Here are my questionaire results, and these lead me to what my magazine looks like now;

 Looking back at my results, you can tell that females were more inclinded to read my magazine as when asking what colours were preffered i got the result of "PINK AND PURPLE", but looking at this as males took my quiz too, knew that males would too. So i went along with the preferred gender but also thinking out of the box i changed the colour scheme and made it less feminine and more attractive towards men also.

Evaluation - Conventions.

For my magazine i created an Indie/Pop magazine that is aimed at 13-18 year olds. The magazine is aimed more towards girls as that was the most popular in my questionaire, but men can also read it.

I modelled my magazine on magazines such as NME and Kerrang, these magazines have the same Genre as my magazine.

The main conventions of my magazine are;
- Cluttered layout e.g. Coverlines
- A main image in the center of the magzine
- Coverlines around the Image
- My hotspot is my Image
- Bold Masthead
- Darker colour scheme to link with genre, also it was requested in questionaire.

Contents page;
- Message from the Editor
- Plain background
- Contains lots of information
- Picture to illustrate the name of the magzine

Double page spread;
- One main image of the model
- Interview
- Pull quotes and standfirst
- Page numbers
- Seperate image but linked with main one
- Same colour scheme throughout
- Main Title

IMPROVED COURSEWORK - Front page, Contents page & Double page spread. COMPLETE.

I have taken advice and slightly changed my magazine. For example I have moved some of the coverlines on my front page and used a different shaping for the background for some writing. I did this so it gave it varitation and it wasnt all boxed.

I didnt change anything on my contents page, as i am really happy with the way it looks. Also I wasnt given pointers on how to make that better.

Finally on my contents page I added another pull quote and also a caption to the photo in the bottom right corner. I also added  page number which matched the contents page.
